Health-related quality of life and its associated factors among Hosanna town prisoners, Central Ethiopia

BACKGROUND:
Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among prisoners is a multidimensional concept that reflects the prisoners’ perception and evaluation of their physical, psychological, social, and environmental well-being in relation to their imprisonment situation. It is a valid and important indicator of their health needs, risks, and outcomes. There is a paucity of evidence on the magnitude of HRQoL and associated factors among prisoners in the study area.
OBJECTIVE:
The objective of this study was to assess HRQoL and associated factors among prisoners in Hosanna town prison center, Central Ethiopia, 2023.
MATERIALS AND METHODS:
An institutional-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 421 prisoners using a simple random sampling technique from December 1 to 31, 2023. Data were coded and entered into EpiData v4.6.0.6 and analyzed using SPSS 26. RESULTS:
The overall magnitude of HRQoL was 48.33 (95% CI: 47.20, 49.45). Being older age (β = −0.12, 95% CI: −0.218, −0.02), depression (β = −2.91, 95% CI: −5.17, −0.65), and chronic medical illness (β = −4.91, 95% CI: −7.56, −2.25) were statistically associated with the HRQoL.
CONCLUSION:
The study revealed that the magnitude of HRQoL was nearly half among study participants. The findings suggest a significant negative correlation between being an older prisoner, experiencing depression, and chronic medical illnesses with HRQoL.
