Greater than the sum of its parts: A view of professional counseling grounded in history and looking toward the future

Abstract

Three counseling histories—career counseling, social justice, and humanistic counseling—taken together, offer a framework for conceptualization and training that aligns in a holistic way with the profession's values. These foundations comprise a unique professional identity, which can allow counselors to adequately address complex client needs.
