Going Overboard: Hélène Cixous’s “Aller à la Mer,” A Feminist Theoretical Performance

Ann C. Hall

ABSTRACT

Hélène Cixous’s “Aller à la Mer” created waves in theatrical criticism when it first appeared in 1984. The essay not only encourages rereading of the Cixous piece but also argues that the piece should be read as a performance piece, not an academic argument. Doing so reveals and illustrates Cixous’s challenge to women, feminism, and theater.
