GIS-based assessment of accessibility performance of urban recreation areas: Akyazı neighborhood, Ordu

Mustafa Umut Bektaş, Murat Yeşil, Eda Şentürk
This study quantitatively evaluates the accessibility and spatial quality performance of 10 recreational areas located in Akyazı Neighborhood, Altınordu District, Ordu Province. The study method includes literature review, Area observations, technical measurements, and spatial analyses. The evaluation was structured in accordance with TS 12576 and TS 9111 standards and Universal Design Principles. Park entrances, circulation routes, ramp systems, urban furniture, play areas, and sensory guidance elements were examined. Data were evaluated using the Weighted Accessibility Scoring Model (WASM) and spatial qualities were scored. It was determined that ramp slopes varied between 10.7% and 36.6%, that there were no tactile surface systems, and that urban furniture was ergonomically inadequate. Geographic Information Systems-based density analyses revealed that areas with low accessibility performance were clustered at the neighborhood level. Spearman correlation analysis showed a strong positive relationship between accessibility performance and spatial quality (rho=0.781, p=0.005). The results indicate that structural and sensory barriers limit equal access to public spaces. The study aims to contribute scientifically to the creation of inclusive living environments by providing a measurable assessment framework for urban landscape planning processes.
