Getting Black Men to Unmask the Weight of Patriarchy

Latonia Moss

Abstract

Patriarchy hurts us all. With over two decades of classroom experience teaching Black males. I have watched them struggled to ascertain the meaning of “The American Dream.” The paradox of patriarchy befuddles their academic goals because Black males can have more oppressed social identities depending on which identities they ascribe too. Intersectionality can now be used to theorize the plight of Black men offering insight into their intersecting marginalized identities that stand as a threat to their upward mobility. The community college is an accessible and affordable pathway to higher education, and many Black males have chosen that route although they have struggled to find a sense of belonging and persistence.
