Generosity Beyond Borders

Robert Sattelmeyer

ABSTRACT

This article sketches the career of Leon Howard as an exemplar of the generosity that made American literary studies a respected discipline in the United States and the world during the twentieth century. It touches on Howard’s generosity to students and colleagues, his wide-ranging primary scholarship and biographical work, and especially on his contributions to spreading the study and appreciation of American literature in communities and universities around the world after World War II.
