Generative AI Tools in Preservice Teacher Education
Amanda Chapman, Nancy LukeAbstract
This chapter explores the evolving role of generative artificial intelligence in preservice teacher education, emphasizing its integration into educator preparation programs and its alignment with national and state technology standards. Drawing on frameworks such as the International Society for Technology in Education Standards, ways in which teacher candidates are being prepared to navigate and ethically implement AI tools in K–12 classrooms are described. Included are the pedagogical, administrative, and inclusive benefits of AI, for personalized learning, differentiated instruction, and streamlined classroom management. Critical concerns such as bias, misinformation, and the digital divide, advocating for AI literacy and ethical use as essential components of teacher preparation are also addressed. Through field-tested examples from a digital literacy course, the chapter presents practical applications of AI in lesson planning, content creation, and student engagement. The chapter concludes by emphasizing the need for ongoing professional development and research to support responsible AI integration, positioning teacher educators as leaders in shaping the future of technology-enhanced education.
