Generally Speaking: The Wicked Problem of Generative AI Integration in the Core Curriculum

Laura E. Cruz, Tiffany Petricini

ABSTRACT

The present study seeks to establish a foundation for discussing, and assessing, the “wicked problem” of the integration of AI across the general education curriculum, a level of analysis that has yet to be studied. The authors seek to build that foundation through the pre- and post- assessment of two essential learning outcomes (ELOs), i.e., curiosity/inquiry and integrative thinking, in a required public speaking course (n=133) that positions AI not as a tool, but as a way of thinking. Implications for research and practice include recommendations regarding the future positionality of AI within general education.
