GC-MS Analysis of Bioactive Compounds in Plants Used as Anti-Urolithiatic Agent
Dnyaneshwari Madhukar Jadhav, Suraj Kadam, Manisha Dhotre, Swati SwamiMedicinal plants are long been used for the management of urolithiasis. Present study was undertaken to evaluate bioactive compounds present in selected medicinal plants using Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis. Plant extracts of Musa paradisiaca, Bergenia ligulata, Phyllanthus niruri, Taraxacum officinale, and Tribulus terrestris were prepared using solvent extraction and subjected to GC-MS profiling. The chromatographic analysis revealed presence of various bioactive compounds including flavonoids, phenolics, terpenoids, fatty acids, and ester derivatives. Major compounds such as benzofuran derivatives, neophytadiene, and phthalic acid esters were identified, which are known for their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antiurolithiatic properties. These compounds may inhibit calcium oxalate crystallization, reduce oxidative stress, and promote diuresis. The findings validate the traditional use of these plants and suggest their potential in developing an effective herbal formulation for kidney stone management.
