Gamifying Workplaces: Applying AI-driven Esports and Sports Simulation Models to Boost Employee Motivation, Engagement, and Psychological Well-being
Amitava Pal, Channi Sachdeva, Ewelina Idziak, Farida ViraniAs organizations undergo rapid digital transformation and the expectation evolves to a new engagement and workplace experience for the employee, it has become impossible to maintain the traditional engagement model. This chapter examines the application of gamification – an approach over two decades in the making that draws from elements of game design, sports psychology, and behavioral science – to strategically amplify workplace motivation, learning, resilience, and organizational performance. Based on well-established theories (e.g., Self-determination Theory (SDT), Flow Theory, Goal-setting Theory), the chapter elaborates the psychological processes through which gamified systems function in corporations. It also explores the rise of new technologies like AI dashboards, virtual reality (VR) simulations, and mixed reality (MR) platforms that reshape employee training, team bonding, and well-being programs. This chapter provides some pragmatic frameworks for thinking about how to architect systems for an inclusive, ethical, and evidence-driven gamified ecosystem, as well as some tactics for competition fatigue, language bias, and privacy issues. Case examples of relevant applications from sports, Esports, and enterprise learning models are provided throughout the chapter. The chapter concludes by proposing a phased adoption roadmap, as well as possible future developments such as blockchain-based credentials, AI-guided mentors, and sustainability-linked reward schemes. In the end, it redefines the workplace as an arena of mental gymnastics, intentional play, and flexible execution, turning gamification into a necessity rather than a gimmick in the coming of age of work.
