G. V. Andreev (Dzhurabaev) on the Development of Private Muslim Periodicals in Turkestan Using the Example of the “Al-Islah” Magazine

Understanding the processes occurring in publishing and Muslim periodicals was an important part of Russia's imperial policy in Turkestan. This article explores a little-studied topic: the development of relations between the administration of the Turkestan Governorate-General and local elites, proponents of the Jadid modernization narrative and proponents of the so-called “new method” of teaching in Muslim schools, during the final years of the Russian Empire. Discussions of this new educational methodology were actively conducted in the pages of regional private Muslim periodicals. The circle of Turkestan experts who had the opportunity to observe this debate and attempt to understand it consisted of only a few individuals, including Georgy Vladimirovich Andreev (Dzhurabaev). Below, we analyze the article “The New Muslim Journal ‘Islakh’ and Its Editor Abdurakhman Sadykov”, published by G. V. Andreev (Dzhurabaev) in 1915 in the Turkestan News.
