Future Perspectives on Wellbeing
Norimune KawaiAbstract
This chapter explores future perspectives on wellbeing within the context of inclusive education and society. Wellbeing is increasingly recognised as a dynamic and multidimensional construct shaped by psychological, social, economic and environmental factors. As global challenges such as digital transformation, climate change and social inequality escalate, there is a pressing need to reimagine wellbeing through inclusive and systemic lenses. This chapter examines foundational theoretical models – including the Positive emotion, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, and Accomplishment (PERMA) model, the Capability Approach, Self-Determination Theory (SDT) and the Biopsychosocial Model – highlighting their implications for designing inclusive educational and community practices. It also emphasises the importance of cultural and contextual adaptability, noting that wellbeing must be addressed through participatory approaches that centre the voices of marginalised and underrepresented groups. Key themes such as intersectoral collaboration, digital inclusion, universal design and social-emotional learning (SEL) are discussed as critical pathways for fostering equitable wellbeing outcomes. This chapter further explores policy innovations, community empowerment strategies and transdisciplinary research that can inform future directions. Ultimately, it advocates for a holistic and justice-oriented framework that integrates wellbeing into all levels of social systems – from classrooms to governments. By drawing connections between theory, policy and practice, this chapter provides a comprehensive vision of how inclusive approaches to wellbeing can lead to a more equitable and sustainable future for all.
