Future Directions and Opportunities

Increased demand for animal-based food from the world's expanding population, habitat loss, intensive farming, wet markets with poor sanitation, fast air travel, weather changes, and frequent RNA virus mutations all contribute to the development of pandemics. To prevent future outbreaks, comprehensive animal surveillance, risk assessment for zoonotic diseases, and monitoring of human–animal interactions are crucial. Proper regulation of high-security laboratories, development of broad-spectrum antiviral treatments, and improved healthcare preparedness are essential. Vaccination of the elderly, artificial intelligence (AI)-powered event-based surveillance, and efficient contact tracing will help minimize pandemic risks and enable quicker recovery.
