From scope of practice to expertise: Clarifying the relationships among key concepts in professional practice

Sharon Ann Van Wicklin

Scope of practice, standards of practice, competence, competency, certification, credentialing, privileging, and expertise are foundational concepts in professional practice; however, these terms are frequently misunderstood, inconsistently defined, or used interchangeably. Confusion surrounding these concepts may create uncertainty among health care professionals, educators, employers, certifying organizations, and regulators. This article clarifies the relationships among these key concepts, defines each concept, examines common misconceptions, and presents conceptual and practical frameworks that illustrate how these concepts interact to support professional practice. The progression from competence to expertise is emphasized, along with the roles of competency assessment, certification, credentialing, and privileging in supporting safe and effective professional practice. Understanding these distinctions supports the delivery of safe, effective, and ethical patient care. Clarifying the relationships among these concepts provides a foundation for informed decision-making by health care professionals, employers, educators, certifying organizations, and regulatory bodies.
