From greener to smarter: the intelligent library ecosystem at Landmark University

This feature aims to examine the intersection of green library practices and smart technology, with a particular focus on how Landmark University’s Centre for Learning Resources in Nigeria is pioneering an intelligent ecosystem approach that offers lessons for institutions worldwide.
Design/methodology/approach
The feature uses a case study methodology, drawing on the Landmark University experience with Alexandria Library Management Software automation, institutional repository development using EPrints and digital-first collection strategies. The analysis is contextualised within the broader Nigerian higher education ecosystem and international green library innovations, including the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions Green Library Award and Foshan Library’s intelligent book stacks project.
Findings
The integration of AI, blockchain, cloud computing and ambient intelligence technologies is transforming university libraries from passive green structures into active, responsive intelligent ecosystems. Landmark University’s experience demonstrates that foundational automation, digital-first collections, institutional repositories and open science initiatives collectively position institutions to advance sustainability goals while enhancing user experience and research impact.
Originality/value
This feature contributes to the emerging discourse on intelligent green libraries by providing a detailed case study from the Global South, specifically Nigeria. It offers practical recommendations for university libraries, institutional leaders and policymakers seeking to leverage technology for sustainability in challenging environments.
