From data to action: combining behavioural insights and AI for infodemic management

DV Brito, LQ Pinto, DC Pinto

Abstract

This presentation explores how behavioural insights and artificial intelligence can be combined to enhance public health communication, surveillance and decision-making. Drawing on the work of the GT-3C Information Management and Artificial Intelligence subgroup, it focuses on digital tools to monitor, interpret and respond to misinformation and public perceptions, while supporting timely public health action. Using a concise visual narrative, the presentation will highlight AI-supported tools for the production, adaptation and quality review of health information. It will also address practical tools to help health professionals identify and respond to misinformation, and social listening approaches to monitor narratives, perceptions and behavioural patterns in digital environments, with a focus on vaccine hesitancy. These examples will illustrate how digital information and behavioural insights can inform communication strategies and community engagement within the broader GT-3C model. The main implementation lesson is that artificial intelligence can support more adaptive, evidence-informed and responsive approaches to infodemic management only when digital insights are integrated into public health workflows. The presentation will also highlight key conditions for responsible implementation, including ethical safeguards, careful interpretation of data and human oversight.
