Hospital readmission with respiratory diseases among pediatric population remains the leading concern for healthcare services due to their increased morbidity, burden on healthcare and resource utilization. Understanding the factors related to readmission may help improve outcomes and lessen preventable hospitalization. This study was conducted to determine the rate of rehospitalization among pediatric population and to identify the risk factors for hospital readmission.
Methods
A retrospective cross-sectional study of pediatric patients with respiratory diseases was conducted at a tertiary care hospital in Pakistan from 1 st January 2024 to 31 st December 2024. Data was collected from a medical record through a structured proforma. Variables like age, gender, diagnosis, severity of disease, previous hospitalization, compliance to treatment, and length of stay in hospital were analyzed. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 27 version.
Results
During the study period, there were 2123 pediatric admissions among which 583 admissions were related to respiratory diseases. In the duration of one month (30-days), the readmission rate in total pediatric admissions was 6.92%. Readmissions were significantly associated with younger age, compliance to the treatment, disease severity, and previous hospitalization. Among respiratory diseases, bronchiolitis, pneumonia, and asthma were significantly associated with readmission.
Conclusion
Pediatric respiratory readmissions were significantly associated with younger age, disease severity, poor treatment compliance, and previous hospitalization.
