Fostering School Relationships in Urban Schools to Cultivate Risk-Taking and Rigour in Learning
Sunaina Sharma, Wendy LangAbstract
In this chapter, we explore how fostering meaningful relationships in urban school settings cultivates academic risk-taking and rigour, ultimately supporting student success and well-being. Grounded in relational pedagogy and informed by contemporary research, the chapter outlines three essential relationship domains: student-to-student, student-to-teacher, and student-to-school community. Through these lenses, we demonstrate how trust, collaboration, and belonging foster environments where students feel safe to take intellectual risks, learn from failure, and strive toward academic and personal growth. Practical strategies such as collaborative learning, personalized feedback, scaffolded inquiry, and inclusive recognition practices are explored. Emphasis is placed on ‘failing forward’ as a mindset that encourages students to view mistakes as opportunities rather than obstacles. A case study, the Hallway of Heroes project, illustrates how authentic school–community partnerships affirm student identity, raise academic expectations, and promote civic engagement. The chapter also includes discussion and practice questions designed to help educators examine their current practices and implement relational strategies in their classrooms. Ultimately, we argue that investing in robust relational ecosystems is critical for cultivating equity, resilience, and rigour. By centring relationships, urban educators can create inclusive, high-trust environments where students feel empowered to take risks, grow through challenges, and reach their full potential.
