Foregrounding as A Stylistic Technique InDul Johnson's Across The Gulf

AHGU, ASHEAZI, EMBUGUSHIKI, A.U.

The study is a foregrounding analysis of Dul Johnson's Across the Gulf. The research which is primarily textual analysis investigated how the author in his creative and imaginative craftsmanship and acumen foregrounded certain linguo-literary features to achieve stylistic effects in the novel. Thirty excerpts were extracted from the novel through purposive sampling technique, presented and analysed based on the theory of foregrounding. The findings revealed that the writer used foregrounding as one of the techniques in writing the text. There were several deviations from the norm in his presentation of text which were evident in the odd use of capitalisation, italic, neologism and unusual textual layouts. There were also instances of repetitions which struck the reader's attention. The study concluded that the presentation of the familiar in a strange or unfamiliar way is a useful technique for enhancing people's perception of the world around them.
