“For G. B. S.” (1946)

Nelson O’Ceallaigh Ritschel

ABSTRACT

Eugene O’Neill’s “For G. B. S.” details the little-known tribute that O’Neill wrote for George Bernard Shaw on the occasion of Shaw’s ninetieth birthday, published in The Saturday Review of Literature on July 27, 1946. The origins of O’Neill’s tribute are considered, including O’Neill’s affirmation of the influence of Shaw’s The Quintessence of Ibsenism. The brief but poignant tribute is included.
