Flapless versus flap technique for evaluation of crestal bone loss and osseointegration of dental implants: a randomized clinical trial
Abdalla M. Wais, Ahmed M. Elshrief, Marwa T. IbrahimObjectives
Evaluation of flapless and flap techniques on initial crestal bone loss and osseointegration of dental implants clinically and radiographically.
Patients and methods
This is a comparative randomized clinical trial that was carried out on 20 patients, which was divided into two groups, group I: 10 patients received implants with flapless technique in mandibular posterior area. Group II: included 10 patients received implants with flap technique in mandibular posterior area, and postoperative evaluation done clinically for pain, wound healing, scaring and infection, and radiologically evaluated for crestal bone level for both groups immediately and after 6 months.
Results
There was no statistically significant difference between the two studied groups regarding age, sex, crestal bone loss, primary, and secondary implant stability. Regarding postoperative pain there was a statistically significant difference between the two studied groups.
Conclusion
There is no difference between flapless and flap dental implant insertion strategies in terms of implant stability and crestal bone loss, indicating that both approaches are equally successful in attaining osseointegration and preserving implant stability over time, the postoperative pain in flapless group showed less severity and duration of pain perception.
