Finite Element Analyses for Uterine Fibroid Management: A Comprehensive Computational Approach
Sara Rodrigues, Daniel Fidalgo, Marco Parente, Dulce OliveiraBackground/Objectives: Uterine fibroids are among the most common benign pelvic tumors in women. Although their prevalence may be underestimated due to asymptomatic patients, they are linked to significant morbidity. Computational simulations emerge as a valuable tool to study and select the appropriate treatment modalities according to the patient’s needs and aspirations. Therefore, the present work proposes a computational model of regular sized uterus with uterine fibroids to explore its biomechanical response under several scenarios. Methods: The regular-sized uterine model was adapted from an existing pregnant uterine model and implemented in Abaqus for computational analysis. The variables tested include: uterine fibroid’s rigidity, size, location, depth, and intrauterine and intra-abdominal pressure. Results: The results suggest that these variables influence the mechanical response of the uterine wall, particularly in regions adjacent to the fibroid. Conclusions: Despite the limitations imposed by the model assumptions and geometry, the present study provides biomechanical insights that may contribute to treatment planning following further experimental validation and clinical translation.
