Finance: In, Through and of Platforms

Abstract

This chapter juxtaposes digital platforms against a shift towards financial integration and technological standardization as India responds to global trends. Digital platforms ease people, embedded in various networks, into digital finance and payments. Yet, local logics shape the selective use of platforms. They mutually interact with everyday financial chains in India. People weave platform-based finance solutions with ritual events and relational ties that are highly valued within community networks. This chapter illustrates these aspects through case studies on financial exchanges within urban networks in the on-demand ride-hailing sector and routine financial planning in rural circuits.
