Film festivals: Structuring spaces for political cinema?

Questioning the effectiveness of political films as a tool for examining our societies and how they are changing raises the issue of how these films reach their audiences in a context where only a small number of productions are distributed in cinemas or broadcast on television. In order to create specific spaces for this kind of film, many activists have chosen to experiment with the festival system. By analysing a corpus of ten French political film festivals, this article examines the choice of ‘festival form’ made by the organizers of these events in the light of the objectives pursued. It attempts to answer this question by drawing on three disciplinary fields: film festival studies , in order to situate our reflection within pre-existing research devoted to the ‘film festival’ object; socio-economics , by highlighting in our reflection the strategy of the actors behind these events; and the sociology of commitment , which will enable us to consider the choices made by the organizers of these festivals through the prism of the wider landscape of commitment and activism.
