Ferredoxin Feedback: A Redox Switch for Efficient Nitrogen Use in Maize

ABSTRACT

A recent study by Jia et al. identifies a nitrate‐sensitive regulatory module in maize chloroplasts that regulates nitrogen assimilation through the interaction of ferredoxins ZmFd4 and ZmFd9 . This mechanism allows maize to adjust nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) in response to varying nitrate availability. This regulatory mechanism advances our understanding of nitrogen metabolism and may inform strategies to improve NUE in crops, particularly under nitrogen‐limited conditions, with implications for sustainable agriculture.
