Features of the organization and activities of representative bodies of modern socialist states

Valentina Balkovaya, Alexander Torchilo

In the current context of Russia's reorientation of foreign policy relations toward the East, socialist countries represent significant potential for developing international legal cooperation. The onstitutional model established in the USSR in 1936 significantly influenced the development of their legal systems.Using this model as a starting point for their own socialist construction, these countries creatively developed it, forming their own viable state models that embodied both the gen- eral, natural features of the evolution of socialist statehood and the national specifics of each social- ist country. Representative bodies in these countries played a key role in this, embodying the idea of socialist democracy. This article, based on an analysis of the texts of the current constitutions of a number of socialist states (the People's Republic of China, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, the Lao People's Democratic Republic, and the Republic of Cuba), conducts a theoretical and comparative study of the structure, formation, and role of representative bodies-socialist parliaments – in the system of supreme state bodies. This is all the more important given that the classical socialist state was originally created as a special type of parliamentary republic.
