Far right and foreign policy: Ideology, strategy, style and discourse

Thorsten Wojczewski

This article explores the ideological, strategic, stylistic and discursive dimensions of far-right foreign policy. Building on and connecting far right and International Relations scholarship, the article makes a conceptual contribution to the symposium and the study of far-right foreign policy by developing a multidimensional framework that captures the core elements of the far right’s ideological project and how it is advanced, performed and constituted through a distinct repertoire of strategies, styles and discourses. This repertoire shapes political mobilisation and goal attainment; communication, performance and decision-making; and identity construction in the realm of foreign policy. Adding to the predominant focus on populism in the International Relations literature, this article makes the case for a more sustained engagement with the nature and international dimensions of far-right ideology, as well as the strategic, stylistic and discursive manifestations of far-right foreign policy.
