Family members´ experiences of participation in the care of a hospitalized relative

Introduction
To meet the increasing global healthcare needs a reorganization of healthcare is required to make it more efficient, coordinated and person-centered. This involves increasing patient participation and personalize care to the patients specific needs. Relatives play an important role in this process as their involvement can contribute to more personalized care. By involving relatives in care healthcare professionals can better understand the patients situation and needs, which is crucial for creating effective and person-centered care.
Aim
To investigate the scientific basis for relatives´ experiences of being involved in the care of their sick relatives in hospitals.
Methods
A systematic review including studies with a qualitative approach. Literature searches were conducted in PubMed, CINAHL and PsycInfo. Results were analysed using thematic analysis designed for systematic reviews.
Results
Three analytical themes emerged: Desire to communicate with healthcare professionals, Bearing the burden and Desire to be recognized as important. Seven descriptive themes emerged: Paths, Needs, Strategies, Strains, Sacrifices, Invisible and A helping hand.
Conclusion
The results showed that relatives of hospitalized patients often feel excluded and receive insufficient information, leading to emotional strains. To improve relatives´ involvement more information and recognition as important is desired. Person-centered care and clear guidelines can help include relatives in care.
