Factors Affecting Awareness of the Voluntary Adult Guardianship System: Evidence From Shidu Mothers in Urban China

Yanan Yang, Lin Lin, Jiyuan Zhang, Sheng Xi, Jiaping Zhang

This study examines the factors influencing awareness of the voluntary adult guardianship system among shidu mothers in urban China. Using survey data from Shanghai, we find that socio-economic variables—particularly education, income, and use of community-based eldercare services—are key predictors of guardianship awareness, while health status and aging-related anxiety show no significant effect. Based on these findings, this paper proposes targeted policy strategies to enhance legal outreach, integrate guardianship into care institutions, and improve support for structurally disadvantaged groups. The study contributes to the growing body of literature on aging, gender, and elder law in transitional welfare states.
