Facing the crude economic challenges in Africa: Towards reviving the coal industry in the face of Nigeria’s overused crude oil
Maureen Nwando OnyejegbuThis paper explores the various economic challenges facing Nigeria and examines the possible ways of rectifying this disturbing trend. The Nigerian economy is largely dependent on crude oil since its discovery in the 1950s which led to a partial overlook of other viable economic outlets. Nigeria is in debt due to internal problems and is looking for a way to be financially independent and buoyant again. This paper examined the potential of maximally resuscitating the coal industry and other useful mineral resource industries to help the economy bounce back. Result shows that it was the discovery of crude oil and natural gas that dwindled focus on coal. The paper advocates for a new focus towards harnessing and tapping both renewable and non-renewable resources at this time. Given the continued use and over-dependence on crude oil products, the nation may experience extinction in the near future. Guarding against this major economic quagmire is essential for the revival of the Nigerian economy. Data is collected through secondary sources.
