Facing Eating Disorder Fears (FEDF)

Cheri A. Levinson, Rachel M. Butler

Abstract

This Therapist Guide is designed to help therapists treat eating disorders by addressing the fear that maintains them. Facing Eating Disorder Fears (FEDF) is an exposure-based treatment that is designed to address core fears present in eating disorders. This guide describes empirically supported imaginal and in vivo exposure techniques and how to best implement them for clients with eating disorders. FEDF is backed by over a decade of research showing that this treatment approach can improve fear of weight gain, anxiety about food/eating, and overall eating disorder symptoms. FEDF can be used transdiagnostically for clients with any eating disorder diagnosis characterized by excessive fear and anxiety. This session-by-session Therapist Guide provides the necessary information to successfully implement FEDF, including psychoeducation and rationale, exposures, and how to address common challenges as they arise.
