Fútbol as a Setting for Religiousness in Latin America, a Dynamic Transmitted by Music and Popular Culture
Claudio Ramirez-UribeI assess the intertwining of religion, popular culture, and music in a specific region of the world: Latin America. The broad, leading question is: How do soccer [fútbol] and popular music as a mass phenomenon become settings for secular and nonsecular religious behavior in Latin America? Thus, I conduct my approach on a distinct research object: the mass media phenomena of fútbol and the music around it as a religious experience. Both spheres of fútbol and music are usually felt and perceived in Latin America’s popular culture as symbols of unity, tradition, and even faith. By applying a descriptive and qualitative analysis, I aim to identify interconnection levels between secular and religious spheres in Latin American contexts.
