Exploring the Online Academic Acculturation of Multilingual Learners During Covid

Gwendolyn M. Williams, Mary S. Diamond

This study examined how multilingual students exhibited the various stages of academic acculturation, as evidenced through their written assignments both at the beginning and the end of the semesters after they had become accustomed to online instruction. The research questions for this study were as follows: What were the essences of the challenges that the students encountered when they migrated to online English learning? What strategies did the students find to be most helpful in adjusting to learning English through an online platform? This research used thematic analysis to study the subjects’ sensemaking of their experience of transitioning to an online learning model. The chapter will describe findings of various student experiences from their frustration with language issues, technology issues, interaction challenges, and instructional distractions before offering practical suggestions to address the concerns revealed in the study’s data.
