Exploring the Challenge of Emotional Labor for Women Higher Education Leaders During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Cassandra A. Heath

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic significantly intensified the emotional labor experienced by women in higher education leadership. This chapter explores the unique burdens these leaders faced during the pandemic, including managing institutional responses, supporting community well-being, and maintaining their own emotional stability. Drawing from qualitative insights, it examines the impact of the pandemic on leadership practices and underscores the urgent need for systemic support structures that recognize and respond to the emotional demands placed on women in academic leadership.
