Exploring cardiac kinetic energy in children with atrial septal defects: a case-control study

Henning Clausen, Elin Friberg, Per M. Arvidsson, Petru Liuba, Pia Sjöberg

During systole, RV peak KE among patients with ASD decreased after treatment independent of peak RV volumes, whereas LV peak systolic KE increased after ASD treatment due to improved LV filling conditions. During diastole, RV peak KE is higher than normal and reflects both the large ventricular blood volume and the streaming shunt volume from the ASD and normalizes after treatment.
