Exploring anticolonial narratives through the never-seen films of De Seta and Massip

Vittorio De Seta and José Massip were two of the many directors who documented the anticolonial struggle in Guinea-Bissau and wrote diaries about their travels in the liberated areas. Curiously, these diaries reference the filmmaking process (in the case of Massip) and the research (in the case of De Seta) for films that were never displayed. Focusing on the filmmaking process and the obstacles they faced, these unrealized films provide crucial insights that contribute to debate on the historical legacy of the anticolonial struggle against Portuguese colonialism in Guinea-Bissau, the solidarity internationalist networks with African liberation movements and, finally, how cinema informed the anticolonial struggles by strengthening and broadcasting historical representations and creating original aesthetical narratives to tell the story of African liberation movements.
