Exploration of Interlinkage Between Health Insurance Schemes and Medical Tourism in India: Opportunities and Challenges
Pooja Rani, Rupinder KaurMedical procedures from India have become highly attractive to global medical tourists because their prices match only a small portion of what developed nations charge for the same treatments. Health insurance schemes function as an essential but frequently ignored element for this growth because they include local and international insurance programs. Research explores how health insurance serves medical tourism in India by evaluating the positive aspects and potential barriers within the process. Research investigates the impact that both public (like Ayushman Bharat) and private health insurance programs have on making medical care accessible and affordable, and enhancing India’s medical tourism appeal. Insurance benefits healthcare providers by drawing more patients, but its restrictive portability, unstandardized medical coverage, and regulatory complexities remain as continuing challenges for international patients. This chapter presents policy recommendations and public–private partnership strategies because they represent essential components for maximizing the potential growth of the expanding sector. India’s role as a worldwide healthcare center will benefit significantly when insurance systems join the medical tourism infrastructure through proper strategic integration.
