Abstract

Background:

Many patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) fail to achieve glycemic targets with monotherapy or dual oral antidiabetic therapy, necessitating timely treatment intensification. Triple fixed-dose combinations (FDCs) may improve glycemic control while reducing pill burden and enhancing adherence. This survey evaluated clinician perspectives on the role of a dapagliflozin–glimepiride–metformin extended-release (ER) triple FDC in routine T2DM management.

Materials and Methods:

A cross-sectional, questionnaire-based survey was conducted among 1954 clinicians across India, including consulting physicians, general physicians, diabetologists, cardiologists, endocrinologists, and nephrologists. A structured questionnaire assessed perceptions regarding uncontrolled T2DM, preferred treatment intensification strategies, factors influencing triple FDC selection, suitable candidates for early triple therapy, perceptions of a single-pill dapagliflozin–glimepiride–metformin ER combination, and anticipated clinical use. Responses were analyzed descriptively.

Results:

Most clinicians reported that 10%–30% of their patients remain uncontrolled on monotherapy or dual therapy. Following inadequate control on dual therapy, 60.0% preferred intensification with triple oral therapy. Glycemic control with additional cardiovascular benefits was the leading factor influencing triple FDC selection (61.1%). Patients inadequately controlled on dual therapy were considered the most suitable candidates for early triple FDC initiation (50.8%). Overall, 56.1% believed that a single-pill dapagliflozin–glimepiride–metformin ER combination could improve adherence and clinical outcomes.

Conclusion:

Clinicians showed strong support for triple oral therapy and favorable perceptions of dapagliflozin–glimepiride–metformin ER triple FDC, highlighting its potential to improve glycemic control, simplify treatment, and enhance adherence in T2DM management.
