Experimental Database of Exposed Column Base Connections: Mechanical Behavior Insights and Predictive Models

Biao Song, Dimitrios G. Lignos

Abstract

This data paper presents an assembled experimental database comprising 157 physical tests on exposed column base (ECB) connections that were conducted worldwide over the past 40 years. The gathered data include fully digitized monotonic and cyclic base moment-base rotation relationships. The metadata include the loading conditions, the ECB types, and their material and geometric properties. The compiled database is used for the qualitative and quantitative assessment of available design models for the flexural strength and rotational stiffness of ECB connections according to the American and European design practices. The actual flexibility of conventional pinned ECB connections is explicitly quantified. The collected data suggest that when the rotational capacity of ECB connections relies on anchor yielding, the extent of column damage can be minimized. The database presented is publicly available.
