Experiences of Student Veterans in Medical Education

Pamela O’Callaghan, Chantes Still-Ciceron

Abstract

This chapter examines the unique challenges faced by student veterans pursuing medical degrees, particularly those with service-related mental health conditions. Through the lens of two veteran medical students’ journeys, the authors highlight the complexities of academic performance, mental health, and the need for tailored academic accommodations. The chapter explores the cultural and psychological barriers veterans face, including aversions to seeking help or disclosing disabilities due to stigma and military cultural values. Utilizing Knowles’ principles of adult learning (andragogy), the authors present strategies to support veteran medical students, emphasizing the importance of individualized academic advising, coaching, and accommodations. The discussion emphasizes how understanding these veterans’ distinct needs, particularly around service-related conditions like PTSD, can enhance their personal and academic success. Furthermore, this chapter advocates for improved institutional support systems to help veteran students overcome educational and psychological barriers, promoting successful transitions into the medical profession.
