Background:

Many Korean women stay in postpartum care centers ( Sanhujoriwons ) for 2 weeks after childbirth, a critical period for both mothers’ and fathers’ transition to parenthood. Research has been conducted to improve the support and education provided to Sanhujoriwon users. However, most studies have been quantitative, failing to reflect the diverse opinions of users or provide in-depth insight into their experiences.

Objective:

We aimed to explore the experiences of first-time mothers and their spouses using Sanhujoriwons .

Methods:

The qualitative, interpretive phenomenological study employed reflexive thematic analysis. Data were collected through in-depth Zoom interviews with 10 couples who had given birth within the previous year and had stayed at a Sanhujoriwon for 2 weeks following childbirth.

Results:

The results revealed 4 themes: (1) Prioritizing maternal recovery through structured support, (2) Struggling to breastfeed within the institutional environment, (3) Ambivalence toward rooming-in, and (4) Navigating emotional support within the couple.

Discussion:

The findings underscore the need for practical education and professional support in Sanhujoriwons to promote successful breastfeeding and facilitate the transition to parenthood. Furthermore, greater emphasis should be placed on rooming-in practices and family-centered care within Sanhujoriwons .
