Expectations of people with intellectual disabilities (types, sources, contexts)

Teresa Żółkowska

This paper is a qualitative study of the expectations of people with intellectual disabilities (ID). The main goal is to understand the meanings that people with ID give to their expectations in everyday life and to analyze how these expectations are shaped by cultural, social, and individual factors. The work presents various types of expectations, their sources, and features that characterize them, and proposes a model for shaping them in the context of cultural norms and rules. Research indicates that the expectations of people with ID are deeply rooted in culture, and social interaction and upbringing play a key role in the process of their formation. The results highlight that these expectations are not just an expression of internal needs, but also the result of complex interactions with the world around them that shape the way people with ID think and judge. The research has a significant societal relevance, showing how society can better understand and integrate people with ID, responding to their needs and supporting full participation in society.
