Exercise in Kids
Shannon MulhearnSummary
Regular physical activity is essential for children’s physical, mental, and cognitive development, yet most children do not meet the recommended 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity each day. Increasingly, sedentary behaviors, particularly during school hours and through screen-based recreation, have contributed to declining fitness levels worldwide. Research consistently demonstrates that physically active children are more likely to become healthy, active adults, making childhood an important period for establishing lifelong movement habits. Exercise benefits all components of health-related fitness by improving cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, flexibility, body composition, bone health, and metabolic health while reducing risks for obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Beyond physical outcomes, regular activity enhances motor competence, self-confidence, mental health, mood, and cognitive performance, with evidence linking physical activity to improved attention, memory, executive function, and academic achievement. Enjoyment, confidence, and positive social experiences are strong motivators for participation, emphasizing the need for developmentally appropriate, engaging activities rather than adult-centered exercise programs. Parents, teachers, and communities all influence children’s activity levels through role modeling, access to opportunities, and supportive environments. Schools play a particularly important role by providing quality physical education, integrating movement throughout the school day, and implementing whole-school physical activity initiatives. However, disparities related to socioeconomic status, race, gender, neighborhood safety, and access to facilities continue to limit participation for many children. Addressing these inequities while promoting enjoyable, inclusive movement opportunities is essential for improving children’s health and fostering lifelong physical activity habits that extend into adulthood.
