Everyday Modernity in Condorito: Comics, Material Culture and Social Change

Alejandra González-Hermosilla, Gastón Iturra Bastías, Luis Montero Vargas

This article analyses how Condorito, a long-running Latin American humour comic, records transformations in everyday modernity between 1949 and 2019. Adopting a qualitative and interpretive approach, it conducts a multimodal critical discourse analysis of representative scenes from the corpus, selected through a systematic reading of 190 issues and 629 stories. The study examines the representation of domestic technologies, communication media, urban infrastructure, social spaces, work, humour and seriality. It argues that Condorito not only incorporates signs of modernization but organizes them within a stable narrative universe—Pelotillehue, recurring characters and humorous formulas—that makes it possible to observe material and historical changes against a constant formal basis. The article proposes understanding the comic as a dynamic archive of Latin American everyday modernity.
