Evaluation of University Students' Attitudes Towards Dating Violence and Gender Roles

Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate the attitudes of university students towards dating violence and gender roles. Material and Method: It was conducted on a total of 358 students, 180 female and 178 male, studying at Erzurum Technical University and was stratified. The research was conducted descriptively and cross-sectionally. Within the scope of the research, Introductory Information Form, Gender Roles Attitude Scale and Dating Violence Attitude Scale were used as data collection tools. Findings: According to the obtained data, 14.2% of the participants have encountered domestic violence, 1.4% have been exposed to violence in their current relationship, 1.4% perpetrate dating violence in their current relationship, 5.9% have been exposed to dating violence in the past and 2.0% have perpetrated violence against their date in the past. Gender and past violence against their date variables affect gender role attitudes. Gender, department of education, existence of current relationship, exposure to violence in current relationship and past violence against their date variables affect dating violence attitudes. Attitudes towards gender roles affect attitudes towards dating violence. Conclusion: It is concluded that awareness towards dating violence increases as individuals' egalitarian attitudes towards gender roles increase.
