Background:
Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease that may contribute to pro-hypertensive immune activation. This study aimed to evaluate Triggering Receptor Expressed on Myeloid Cells-1 (TREM-1) gene expression in patients with periodontitis and hypertension.
Materials and Methods:
Gingival tissue samples were collected from four groups: healthy controls, periodontitis patients, periodontitis patients with controlled essential hypertension, and patients with controlled essential hypertension alone. TREM-1 mRNA expression was assessed using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction.
Results:
TREM-1 expression was significantly higher in the periodontitis group compared with other groups. The lowest expression was observed in the hypertension group, while intermediate expression was noted in the periodontitis with hypertension group.
Conclusion:
Distinct patterns of TREM-1 expression were observed, suggesting a modulatory role of hypertension and its treatment in periodontal inflammatory responses.
