Abstract

BACKGROUND:

Clinical education (CE) is one of the most essential and core components of medical education. This study aimed to examine the views and perspectives of students to find the shortcomings in the grand round (GR) as CE and to take an effective step in training efficient physicians by improving the educational process.

METHODS:

This descriptive cross-sectional study was performed on 262 trainees, interns and residents in the Golestan teaching hospital, Iran. After obtaining informed consent, a questionnaire of demographic characteristics and a questionnaire related to the factors affecting the educational GR were distributed among trainees, interns and assistants.

RESULTS:

52.7% of the students participating were female with a mean age of 27.44 years, and 47.3% were male with a mean age of 27.90 years. 33.6% of the participants were medical trainees, 33.2% in the internship, and 33.2% in the specialized assistant group. The study’s results showed that 18.4% rated the GR as weak and 24.7% as weak. A comprehensive evaluation of weekly GR with degree showed a significant relationship between the quality assessment of GR and degree. The highest dissatisfaction with the weekly GR belonged to the group of interns, so 41.4% of the interns described the weekly GR as very weak.

CONCLUSION:

According to the results, holding the GR in the current method is somewhat different from the ideal of students who are the target group of educational programs, and the most dissatisfied group with the quality of the GR were internship students.
