Evaluation of fibromyalgia diagnosis of individuals with COVID-19 infection

Introduction: Recent studies have emerged regarding the similarities between fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) and long COVID syndrome (LCS). This study aims to investigate the risk of fibromyalgia and the associated significant factors in individuals who have had COVID-19Method: This prospective study was conducted on 390 individuals who had previously contracted COVID-19. The diagnosis of fibromyalgia was made using the 2016 diagnostic criteria of the American College of Rheumatology and the Fibromyalgia Survey Diagnostic Criteria and Severity Scale.Results: The mean age of the 390 participants included in our study was 55.9±8.2 years (min=31-max=65). The mean follow-up period was 262 days. After one-year post-COVID, the incidence of fibromyalgia was found to be 6.7%. The incidence of fibromyalgia was higher in women and in those with chronic diseases. Individuals who developed fibromyalgia had a higher average age. Among those who developed fibromyalgia, symptoms such as dyspnea and muscle-joint pain, as well as hospitalization rates, were significantly more common. In logistic regression analysis, the risk of fibromyalgia was found to be 2.80 times higher in women and 12.22 times higher in individuals with any chronic disease. A weak positive correlation was found between age and both symptom severity and widespread pain index. In the decision tree analysis, the probability of fibromyalgia was 15% in women with chronic diseases and 5% in men without chronic diseases.Conclusion: : In the post-COVID period, the development of fibromyalgia may be a significant clinical concern, especially in women with chronic diseases. Patients who develop fibromyalgia-like symptoms, particularly those who are female, have chronic conditions, or are older in age, should be monitored more closely.
