During the periparturient period (before and after birth), metabolic and physiological changes become apparent in sheep, accompanied by increased energy and mineral requirements. The negative energy balance and mineral deficiencies that occur during this period can lead to various metabolic diseases, losses in lamb and milk production, and serious economic damage. This study examined 14 clinically healthy multiparous Anatolian Merino sheep, aged two to five years and with optimal body condition scores. The sheep underwent synchronization procedures appropriate for the transition period, followed by mating with rams. Blood samples were collected twice from these sheep during the periparturient period: two weeks before the determined lambing date, and two weeks after birth. Alkaline phosphatase, total calcium, magnesium, glucose, phosphorus, non-esterified fatty acids and beta-hydroxybutyrate levels were then examined. The study found that glucose concentration was high in the sheep during the postpartum period (p < 0.001). No statistically significant differences were found in the other parameters examined (p > 0.05). In conclusion, examining metabolic diseases in the periparturient period of sheep, especially those raised in similar regions and under similar feeding conditions, can provide important information for ensuring healthy reproduction, contributing to animal husbandry, and preventing economic losses in the sector.
