Abstract

Purpose:

To compare anterior chamber angle parameters between Pseudoexfoliation (PFX) and normal control subjects by using anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) imaging.

Methods:

This hospital-based observational study included a total of 170 patients who were divided into two groups: clinically diagnosed PFX (85 patients) and equal number of age and sex matched controls (85 patients). One eye of each patient was selected for analysis, that is 85 eyes in each group. Complete ophthalmic examination and optical biometry was done for anterior chamber depth (ACD) assessment. AS-OCT was used to measure the angle opening distance at 500 and 750 μm (AOD 500, AOD 750) and trabecular iris space area at 500 and 750 μm (TISA 500, TISA 750), both pre- and post-dilatation.

Results:

The mean ACD in the PFX group was significantly lower than in the control group both pre- and post-dilatation ( P < 0.001). All the anterior chamber angle (ACA) parameters such as AOD500, TISA500, TISA750 were significantly lower in the PFX group as compared to the controls both pre- and post-dilatation ( P < 0.001), except AOD750. AOD750 was lower in the PFX group pre-dilatation ( P = 0.438) and higher in the PFX group post-dilatation ( P = 0.16) as compared to the control group. Group × dilatation interactions demonstrated large effect sizes (partial η² >0.14) for ACD and all ACA parameters.

Conclusion:

ACD, gonioscopic score, and all measured ACA parameters except AOD750 were significantly lower in the PFX group than in age- and sex-matched controls. A mixed-effects model showed a significant interaction between groups and dilatation for all the parameters with high effect size. AS-OCT is an important tool that helps in the quantitative analysis of the anterior segment and ACA parameters.
